HELP GET THE LEAD OUT!

Background:

First of all, if you haven't read our letter to Dianne Feinstein, we highly recommend that you do. It goes more in depth into the problems associated with Lead poisoning.

Basically the problem is that many birds are dying from Lead poisoning caused from Lead BB's typically used in shotgun shells and fishing weights. Birds are ingesting this Lead as they "peck" the ground looking for food.

Many of these little Lead BB's are polluting our environment and can be found in streams, farmlands, coastal waters, and just about anywhere hunting or target shooting is allowed. Some areas are so polluted by Lead that they are considered Toxic wastelands!

The USFW (United States Fish and Wildlife) determined that Lead is so toxic to waterfowl and other birds they they made it illegal for hunting, however they only enforce this law for Waterfowl, which makes no sense. States must follow these same rules, however many have no laws regarding the use of Lead when it comes to other forms of hunting. As an example, two hunters are on State or private land and are hunting side-by-side. One is shooting ducks the other quail. The hunter shooting ducks cannot have any Lead in their possession, yet the quail hunter can have as much as she/he wants and can shoot it in the same areas! Even though both birds are considered "migratory" birds as defined by the Migratory Bird Act.

What you can do:

We'd like to put a stop to birds dying from Lead Poisoning. The fact is, Lead is toxic... It doesn't matter if a person is shooting ducks, quail, pheasants or whatever. It makes no sense for the USFW to determine that Lead is toxic then allow States to shoot it for birds that are suppose to be protected by the USFW!

Please help us by taking a stand against Lead. We will collect this information and send it off to our political leaders in hopes of putting public pressure on them to address this problem.

Dear Diane Feinstein (or other political leaders):

As you know, the USFW is responsible for protecting migratory birds as defined in the Migratory Bird Act and has made the use of Lead illegal for hunting waterfowl. It is with great concern that although the use of Lead has been outlawed for waterfowl hunting, it is still used for other migratory birds that are under the protection for the USFW.

It makes no sense for the USFW to conclude that Lead is toxic and only make it illegal to use for waterfowl hunting. Since the USFW has determined that Lead is toxic, then they should make Lead illegal for ALL migratory birds, not just waterfowl! Lead is toxic regardless of what is being shot, or where its being shot at. Case in point, the California Condor has been greatly affective by Lead Poisoning yet its not a waterfowl bird.

I urge you to enact legislation to put a stop to this senseless destruction by making it illegal to use Lead for hunting all migratory birds that are defined in the Migratory Bird act.
